Central Bank de Trinidad and Tobago (Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago)


The central bank of Trinidad and Tobago was established in 1964: it is the second central bank to be created in the anglophone Caribbean after that of Jamaica. At the end of the Second World War, the financial sector of the country was managed by foreign institutions such as British Currency Board. However, the policies carried out by these structures were not compatible with the economic environment of the country, from where the creation of a central bank. The objective of the latter is to maintain a stability monetary and financial in the country.


Various functions must be filled by the central bank of Trinidad and Tobago. First of all, it must work out and make apply the monetary policy by maintaining a rate of inflation weak and an adequate level of monetary reserves. This institution plays also the part of bank and advising with respect to the government. It is also the bank of the commercial banks. In addition, it must manage the foreign exchange market and protect the value from the currency.


Lastly, the central bank of Trinidad and Tobago are the only institution being able to issue the banknotes and the coins. It is it which is in charge of the design, of the maintenance of the integrity of the currency and the production of a sufficient quantity of banknotes and coins.
