Lexicon of the billetophilie

This nonexhaustive lexicon will help the initial banknote collectors to better knowing this activity.


Billetophile: a billetophile collects banknotes. Cartridge: a cartouche indicates an empty site on the ticket which can in particular accommodate the filigree.

Classification of the state of conservation: installation by International Bank Notes Society, it makes it possible to qualify the state of the ticket. This last can be:

    MINT (never circulated)
    SPL (presents rare traces of handling)
    SUP (is in very good state with some light folds)
    TTB (is in good state with some traces of wear and any tear)
    TB+ (is in good state with some foldings, crumplings and holes)
    TB (is intact with tears, traces of wear and foldings)
    B+ (circulated much, has spots, holes and crumplings)
    B (underwent tears and mutilations)
    B- B- B- B- (is dirty, has large holes and missing parts)

Commemorative: a commemorative ticket is issued to point out a significant event.
Counterfeit: it is about a counterfeit bill, of an imitation of an original ticket.
Dimension ticket: it is the selling price of the ticket. Several criteria are taken into account to determine this price, namely the scarcity, the facial value or the state of the ticket.
Forced course: the ticket cannot be exchanged coin against and must be accepted with its face value.

Legal tender: it indicates the tickets in circulation in a country.
Go back to emission: it is the year during which the banknote was put on the market.
Of need: a ticket of need comes in reinforcement from the official currency when this one misses, in particular in times from crisis or war
Fault: a banknote fault underwent an error during its impression. The errors can be numerous: among them are the bur of ink, the overprinting, the shift of a figure, the shift of the label or the absence of filigree. The tickets faults are rare and very required by the billetophiles.
Make in filigree: it is the image which is visible in transparency and which appears in the thickness of paper. It is also a member safety.
Engraver: artist having carried out the engraving of the drawing present on banknote.
Year: it indicates the year registered on the ticket.
Mutilation: a banknote mutilated can be flaring, diluted, torn or broken up.
Mint: a banknote nine never circulated, was never handled. It is characterized by a clean paper and square corners.
Serial number: it is about a number being reproduced on each banknote. For example, the tickets in euros have a single serial number: this number is preceded by a letter which indicates the country from which the ticket comes.
Polychromy: developed at the end of the 19th century, it indicates a kind of impression of the ticket with four colors or more.
